What is microalgae?

The microscopic plants that quietly run the planet.

Microalgae are microscopic, single-celled phytoplankton that live in water and survive by photosynthesis. Given light, water, and carbon dioxide, they produce oxygen and organic matter. They are, in effect, the oldest and most efficient solar factories on earth.

There are more than 30,000 known species of microalgae, yet fewer than ten are in real commercial production. They are rich in protein, vitamins, carbohydrates, pigments, and fatty acids, which is why a single platform built around the right strain can serve markets as different as agriculture, nutrition, skincare, and animal feed.
