Green blood: chlorophyll vs hemoglobin

One atomic substitution apart.

Look at chlorophyll and at the hemoglobin in human blood under a microscope and you find the same ancient scaffold: the same porphyrin ring. The only meaningful difference is the single atom at the center. In hemoglobin it is iron, which lets the molecule carry oxygen through the body. In chlorophyll it is magnesium, which lets it catch light for the cell.

One atomic substitution separates the molecule that powers plants from the molecule that powers our blood.
